    Depending on the size of the salon, it is either the responsibility of the hairstylist or more junior members of staff to wash and condition the client's hair, using the available products on the back bar.

    The Cutting

    Hair stylists during the appointment will be cutting, trimming, bleaching, and coloring (although in some salons there are colorists who specialize in hair color) and styling the hair.

    Depending which country you live will determine on what qualifications and training you need to become a hairdressers.

    Let us look at the USA, UK & Australia

    USA Qualifications

    it is required then you attend a cosmetology school to gain your certificate (and in turn get your state license). You will be required to attend a licensed school to achieve your certificate and this takes two years.

    Some cosmetology colleges allow you to attend evening and weekend schools for those people wishing to study whilst still doing their high school studies.

    UK Qualifications

    You are able to become a hairstylist in the UK with no proper qualifications. The normal route would be via an apprenticeship in a salon and or attend a college. You are able to gain formal qualifications via NVQs (National Vocational Qualification) and most hair salons that employ apprentices usually ensure that their staff attends NVQ courses.

    Australia Qualifications

    In Australia you will need to complete certificate II in hairdressing which can be done during your apprenticeship. There is a certificate III in hairdressing where it is estimated that 79% of hairstylists hold this qualification and for those wishing to study further there is the IV.

    You will need to continually educate yourself, for example, by reading journals, watch YouTube, or attending hairstylist courses and workshops.

    You will also get knowledge from suppliers who will visit salons to carry out product training.
